Who is Freddie Mercury
Freddy Mercury was born on the 5th September 1946 in Zanzibar, subsequently being educated in India at boarding schools, before returning to his place of birth. However, his family fled to the United Kingdom in 1964, as a result of unrest in Zanzibar.
Mercury formed Queen in 1970 with Brian May and Roger Taylor, launching what would become one of the most iconic rock bands in history, with Mercury being regarded as one of the best lead singers of all time, due in part to his stage persona and singing ability. Their hits include We are the champions, Don’t stop me now, Bohemian Rhapsody and many more. Furthermore, Mercury was a songwriter and producer for many other artists after Queen.
Sadly, he passed away on the 24th November 1991 following complications with AIDS, something he only admitted to having the day before and having kept quiet since being diagnosed in 1987. Countless awards and celebrations took place after his death, including being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, tribute concerts and Novello awards. Freddy Mercury was such an intrinsic part of so many lives that he was voted as number 58 on the poll of 100 Greatest Britons.
