Who is Hedy Lamarr

Hedy Lamarr was born in Vienna, Austria on the 9th November 1914 and died on the 19th January 2000. She was an Austrian-American actress and producer, as well as later becoming an acclaimed inventor. She starred in films across Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic before fleeing to London, where she met the head of MGM studios and was offered a contract for Hollywood.

This led to her becoming a star in 1938 as a result of her performance in Algiers and subsequent movies throughout the 1940s, often starring alongside leading actors of the time including Clark Cable in Boom Town and Jimmy Stewart in Come Live with me. Disillusioned by her situation, she founded a production company and starred in further films, with one of her most acclaimed roles coming in 1949, when she played Delilah in Samson and Delilah.

Away from her film career, Lamarr co-invented a radio guidance system that was designed to use frequency hopping spread spectrum to remove the threat of signal jamming. This technology wasn’t used by the US military but the same techniques were later adopted in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and as a result, she was recognised for her work in 2014. A celebrated actor and inventor, Lamarr is a true inspiration to us all.
